Tested at Depth

I have been using this analyser for several years now. It performs really well, the biggest improvement to it would be making it out of metal so it was more sturdy, I have had to have it repaired twice, once by Divesoft in Czech Republic and once by a local service centre (it is nice to know that this is available) I suspect that it did not like being in my soft bag even though it comes in a ballistic nylon case. For personal use at home, I would probably by the same analyser again.

Honestly, this is such a good product that I do not see what feature could be added to a new product that would cause me to replace it. The Perdix 3 is now available with a nice OLED screen. I love that it takes an AA battery, I do not see rechargeable as much of a selling point, you can always find an AA battery, they last ages too, particularly if you use a lithium one or a SAFT. I have used my current one for 100's of dives and it has never let me down, I know that Shearwater will back me up with world class support should it encounter a problem.

The JJ gets called the Land Rover of rebreathers (get a Toyota if you want real reliability) and after owning mine I understand why. It is heavy compared to other units, but it is built like a tank — I've watched people drop them on boats and the unit just shrugs it off. Nothing about it feels fragile, because nothing about it is. The ubiquity turns out to be a feature nobody puts on the spec sheet. There are so many JJs around the world that when the solo board in mine got damaged mid-trip, I was able to borrow a head locally and saved three days of diving. Try doing that with a rarer unit. For travel it also means you can sometimes find a unit at the destination and fly with just your head — worth exploring, because travelling with the full unit takes planning, and the canister is a heavy lump in the luggage. Mine is set up in the GUE configuration, and I dive it primarily in warm water with two S40s manifolded for combined dil and backgas. The unit is highly customisable, so however you've been trained to dive, the JJ will meet you there. Aftermarket support is phenomenal. When I've contacted JJ directly they're prompt to respond, and the fantastic Narked at 90 handle servicing should you need it. The annual service itself is easy and can be done at home with little hassle. It's not the lightest or the cheapest way into CCR diving. It's the one you'll still be diving in fifteen years, surrounded by spares, support, and other people who can lend you a head.

I've been diving my made-to-measure Atlantic for around seven or eight years now, and in all that time it has simply never let me down. This suit has travelled all over the world with me and come through everything I've asked of it. That includes wreck penetrations with many sharp edges and cave diving in high-flow systems — the kind of environment where suits get dragged over rock and hammered by current — and it barely shows a scratch for it. For comparison, I also own a Santi E.Motion: it's lighter, but it shows wear far quicker than the Otter ever has. The Atlantic is the suit I reach for when I know a dive is going to be hard on kit. Mine is set up with the SI-Tech ring system and dry gloves, plus the replaceable neck seal — both worth speccing, as a seal change becomes a five-minute job rather than a repair booking. I have the turbo boots, if you have socks and rock boots fitted you could effectively change everything that could stop a dive. I went made-to-measure and the fit is superb, though if you're a standard size, the off-the-peg suit may well fit you fine without the extra cost. Where Otter really separates themselves is support. Repairs are turned around promptly and at very reasonable cost — significantly less than other manufacturers charge for the same work. I've visited the factory several times, and it's a friendly, family-owned company where they genuinely could not do more to help you. When you're trusting a suit for serious diving, knowing the people who built it will look after it counts for a lot.
